Last Day of Peer Mentoring – May 1st
Attention all STEM students, the last day of Peer Mentoring for the current Spring 2013 semester will be May 1st. The Peer Mentors will be studying and taking exams as well, so they will not be available for tutoring. Thank you for your understanding.
Now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 Achievement Awards
The Achievement Awards are another great opportunity for STEM Program students. Kapi’olani Community College’s Math and Sciences Achievement Awards recognize the accomplishments of outstanding students by providing financial assistance. STEM Program Student Wins Microbiology Award
On April 20th, the annual spring conference for the Hawaii Branch of the American Society for Microbiology was held. Robin Kaai presented a poster in the undergraduate division, while Codi Wong gave an oral presentation in the same division. Please note that Thomas Premeaux was coauthor on Robin’s poster and a major contributor to Codi’s project. Codi was given a travel award, which is perfect timing as she will also be presenting at the national ASM conference in Denver late next month. Be sure to congratulate them on their hard work!!!!
STEM Student wins JABSOM Award!
Congratulations to Robin Kaai (in conjunction with Thomas Premeaux) who recently won the Undergraduate Division of the JABSOM Biomedical Sciences and Health Disparities Symposium. By all indications, this is the first time a community college student has won an award at the symposium, let alone the top honor. Robin has taken all of the micro/molecular biology courses on campus and also serves as a Peer Mentor and tutor for the KapCC STEM Program. Thomas is the student lab coordinator for undergraduate research here on campus.
Additionally, these students are not alone in their presentations. Five other students presented their work at JABSOM, as well as at the KapCC SURF event and the Spring INBRE conferences. Students will be also be presenting at the upcoming local ASM (American Society for Microbiology) conference on Saturday and one student will be presenting at the national ASM conference in Colorado over the Summer. Lastly, we also hope to send students to the SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science) and potentially ABRCMS (Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students) events in the Fall semester.

The KapCC STEM Program was proud to support five students at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), which was held last week in La Crosse, Wisconsin, last. All of the students conducted oral presentations with great professionalism and represented the college well. Students Arvin Niro, Makana Ramos, and Lee Do (faculty advisor, Dr. Aaron Hanai) presented on “Implementing Intelligent Electronic Traction Control Systems in robotic Platforms.” Students Michelle Chu, and Roberto Ramilo (faculty advisor, Dr. Herve Collin) presented on “The Estimation of Daytime Sleepiness in Hawai`i College Students Using Pupilometry.” (http://www.cur.org/ncur_2013/)
April Pa’ina – Thursday, 4/18, 1pm, STEM Center
The April STEM Program Pa’ina will be held on Thursday, 4/18 from 1:00pm-2:30pm in the STEM Center (Koki’o 202). The topic of this month’s pa’ina will be “College Transfer.” Current and former STEM Program students, as well as representatives from UH Manoa will be on hand to give advice on how to best transfer to a 4-year institution. This event is free and open to all students, so please join us!
